Simorgh Alborz did not win a single game during the 2014 RAPL Main Event, after reaching the championship the two previous years. They were down on their luck and pundits were writing off any chance they had for reaching the Nawroz final .
"We let everyone down with our performance last year. The fans, our coaches, and ourselves. This year we came together as a team before the start of this tournament and made a promise to ourselves that no matter what, we would leave everything we had out on the pitch," said Captain Munir Ulhaq.
Center Qadeer Tawana got Simorgh off to a good start early with a goal in the 13th minute. The early lead put pressure on De Spinghar Bazan and forced them into unforced errors and turnovers. Simorgh Forward Sowghun took advantage of one of those turnovers in the 78th minute to score his second goal of the tournament and give his team a commanding lead in the game.
Rafi Barakzai added a goal for De Spinghar Bazan in the 80th minute, but by then it was too late. The home town favorites were forced to watch the northerners celebrate on their field. While Spinghar was eliminated, Simorgh Alborz advanced to the 2015 RAPL Nawroz Tournament final to face defending champions Shaheen Asmayee, which will take place on Afghan New Years day, March 21, 2015.
