About the team
De Maiwand Atalan team covers Kandahar, Nimroz, Helmand, Zabul, and Orozgan provinces. The name is inspired by the famous village in the north of Kandahar called “Maiwand”. The village is notable for the Battle of Maiwand which took place on July 27, 1880 during the Second Anglo-Afghan War.
The battle under the leadership of Ayub Khan defeated two brigades of British troops and dampened morale of the opponents. The battle might not be remarkable if it had lacked the presence of the legendary Malalai, the Afghan lady who rallied local fighters against the British troops at the battle of Maiwand. She fought alongside Ayub Khan and played a vital role in the victory.
De Maiwand Atalan performed prosperously in the 2016 APL, losing no points in the group stage. The draw put the team in Group “A”. Atalan cruised over Majhai Amu in the semi-finals attempting to etch its name on the 2016 Championship cup. However, in a rousing final match, the team was defeated by Shaheen Asmayee. Atalan are standing as the 2016 APL runners-up. Atalan’s Yar Mohammad Zakarkhail was awarded the APL Best Player of Tournament award.
